Race on the Base 10k |
By the start of 2005 I was well into my training for the L.A. Marathon. (I have to give a shout out to John Bingham's book "Marathoning for Mortals" as I used one of his training programs from the book). 5k races didn't really fit into that training but I did find a 10k that fit perfectly into it. In February of 2005 I did the Race on the Base 10k at the Los Alamitos Air Force Base. This was another race that I hated every step of. It was an extremely boring course around the tarmac on the base. I remember it being hot (no shade), long and boring. My time was 1:14.22 with a pace of 11:57. No race photos and no finisher's medal. I don't think they allow cameras on the base.
My next race was the Los Angeles Marathon! Nine long months of training to get there. The plan was to run 5 minutes and walk 1 minute for the entire race. About the half way point my knees gave out and somewhere around the 20 mile mark I had blisters the size of Texas. I think I ended up walk most of the last half of the race. Oh well I didn't care. I was just thrilled to finish. My time was 6:32.59 with a pace of 15:16. I came out of this race with two infected toes.

Finisher's Medal Los Angeles Marathon |
A week later I ran/walked/crawled the Run for Education 5k. My son wanted to do the race so I did it with him. My son isn't a runner so this race was realllyy sllooow. Finish time was 52:13. No race photo, no finisher's medal either.

My next race was the Santa Anita Derby Day 5k this would turn out to be my last race. I wouldn't do another 5k until July 2011. I did this race for no other reason than it was at Santa Anita. Being an avid horse racing fan how could I pass it up. Plus I was meeting an old buddy afterwards for a day at the races. This race set my 5k PR (personal record). I ran this race in 35:05 with a pace of 11:17. No finisher's medal for this one.
