2004 Road Race (6 total)

2004 road races (6)...

The next few posts will be to recap and bring up to date my road races.  Please bear with me as so far I've done 40 of them.

My first 5k was the Village Runner 4th of July 5k in 2004.  I had no idea at the time what this race would lead to.  LOL  My only goal for this race was to run non-stop for the entire race (this would end up being my goal for most every race).  At the time I did this race I knew little to nothing about running.  I finished in 36:53 with a pace of 11:53.  At the time none of this really meant anything to me.  I was just happy I had run every step of the race, although you wouldn't know it from the look on my face.

My next race was a week later.  The Keep LA Running 5k.  It was held in my hometown on my birthday. How could I not do it.  Once again I ran every stupid step of this race.  And I hated every step of it.  I was in pain the whole race.  I finished in 37:02 with a pace of 11:57.   I came out of this race injured.  However, I was too much of a novice to recognize it.  I kept running until I reached the point where I couldn't walk without intense pain and limping.  Bursitis in my heal.

My next race would be the Jet to Jetty 5k. in August 2004. I was still recovering from the bursitis so I decided to walk this race. My goal for this race was to finish in under 45 minutes.  I finished in 43:11 with a pace of 13:53. After the Jet to Jetty race I discovered the Couch to 5k program.

I did the next couple of 5k's by incorporating the program into them.  I would walk for 5 minutes to warm-up then I would do whatever that day's scheduled training was. Then I would walk out the rest of the race.

Next up was the Kicken Cancer 5k in September 2004.  This was my first C25k race. I was on Day 3 / Week 1 of the program.   I finished in 40:11 with a pace of 12:58. No official race photo for this race.  My son took this photo after I got home.

The following weekend I did the Arden Energy Challenge 5k. This was Day 3 / Week 2 of C25k.  I finished in 40:52 with a pace of 13:08.

My last 5k of 2004 was the Dolphin Run 5k in October.  By this point I was a little more than half way through the Couch to 5k program.  Day 3 / Week 6.  I finished in 35:37.  This was by my Garmin timer.  I don't recall why I had no official time.  This was another race without an official race photo.

In 2004 I hadn't yet caught on to the idea of selecting my races based on whether or not the race offered a finisher's medal. So I only have one finisher's medal from 2004.
